Gift Registries

Gift registries are great for retail. For instance, wedding retail revenues have been reported to be second only to those of the Christmas season. Whether you are considering wedding registries, house warming registries or baby shower registries, there are a few noteworthy points that could help to improve your approach.

  • Gift registries offer free brand awareness promotion to people who might be equally interested in your product as the referring friends. After all, friends often share similar interests and values. I therefore recommend gift registries, even if the product type is not typically their best seller. Consider your product and the best (social) media for broadcasting the gift registry to friends. Additionally, consider messages that can appeal to the new like minded visitors. Consider subtle ways of seeking the subscription of registry guests. --

  • Registry owners often appreciate needing to do as little as possible. As a retail, you can therefore add perceived value through convenience, specifically by planning as much of the tedium of the gift registry. It may be useful to note that the average wedding registry is valued at just over $5,000 and couples generally have registries at 3 stores. Additionally, buying intent is driven by 2 key motivation factors: 1) social relationships that inspire the purchase of higher priced items and 2) price-cutting that inspires the purchase of lower priced items.
  • Gift registries are especially successful for certain product types that include appliances, bar items. Products that often remain unfulfilled despite their obvious appeal to the registry owner include tools, furniture, hardware, very highly priced items, very low priced items. If your niche is unpopular for gift registries, ensure the owner's note stresses how much the owner will really appreciate these items.
  • Since retailers have taken over what used to be the traditional role of the bride's family, some people miss the personal touch. With creativity, you may add considerable value by allowing guests to somehow personalize the buying experience if the guests value tradition.
  • Consider these others DOs
    • have a landing page for the gift registry
      • demonstrate to gift givers how your gift registry offers a valuable free service that demonstrate competitive advantage. Examples: couples can choose to receive notifications whenever gifts are bought, reminders to thank gift givers, ...
    • have a policy with hassle-free terms specific to gift registries
      • exchanges and returns, even without receipts
      • stalled delivery dates after the wedding, honeymoon and so on
    • resolve potential problems specifically related to gift registries. Needless to say, you will also need to boast these qualities on the landing page.
      • ensure the system can prevent multiple gift givers from buying the same gift
      • cash funds
      • support local products and services
