Deactivate Payments on or Close a Shopify Store

If you do not want to use your Shopify store completely, you have different options for partly, fully and even temporarily closing the store.

  1. Maintain the basic store without receiving payments. You may prefer this option if you are building on your store and not are yet ready to allow visitors to see and or make payments online. You can either allow visitors access or password protect the store. The monthly cost of this arrangement is USD 14 monthly. However, to properly activate this discounted arrangement, call Shopify directly and request that they turn off the payments facility. Otherwise, you may continue to receive the full monthly charge of USD 29.
  2. Close the store. You may entirely retire the store, even on the backend. Consequently, you will receive no monthly charges. To avoid being charged for the next month, complete the steps below before the next month's payment cycle begins. Shopify uses UTC time. Note however that, if you close the store within 3 days after that new month's payment cycle begins, you may be eligible for a refund. Before proceeding with this option, consider backing up your store, just in case you have a change of heart. The steps are below.
  3. Temporarily close the store. You may prefer to consider this an option if you are certain not to open the store for an extended period, possibly due to illness or other such circumstances. Although Shopify does not expressly offer such an option, it exists. Specifically, Shopify guarantees that closed accounts (as discussed above) are maintain closed stores for up to 90 days. Consequently, if you are able to use the store after that period, you can re-open the store and continue working on it. Before proceeding with this option, consider backing up your store, just in case something changes on the Shopify backend. The steps are below.

Steps to Close Your Shopify Store.

Before closing your store, consider backing up your store content, just in case you change your mind. See those steps on this page. Additionally, you may also sell your store on Shopify's Exchange site.
  • 'Settings' (from within your dashboard)
  • 'Account' (located in the right section of the page among the various options)
  • 'Sell or close your store' (at the bottom of the page. You will therefore need to scroll all the way down to find this option).

Steps to Backup Your Shopify Store's Custom Theme &/ Products

This option allows you to create a copy of your store outside of the Shopify environment. If you wish to reinstate the store, you may import it back into Shopify. This may be useful if your store used a custom theme (and not one of Shopify's free templates). Although Shopify changes its back office from time to time, your custom template is likely to continue to be compatible when or if you decide to return to Shopify.

Outside of the following steps, also consider video recording your store's front and back ends to have a visual record of the store's contents and features.

To download a custom theme
This process includes your liquid files. However, if you wish, take extra precaution by making copies of any liquid file templates you might have made.
  • Settings
  • Online Store
  • Themes
  • Click the 'Actions' (dropdown menu for more options)
  • Download [your custom them]
  • Check your email inbox with the name 'Theme export for www-yourdomain-com-theme_name' for notification
  • Click the 'theme export' link to receive a zipped download whose name starts 'theme_export...'.

To download the product information
This process will save the product tags within the CSV files. However, it will not save 'Collections'. Consequently, save a screenshot of your list of collections and corresponding definitions from within the 'Collections' page.
  • Products (from within your dashboard)
  • Export
  • Select to export 'All products'
  • Select to export as 'CSV file'
  • Click 'Export products' button
  • Check your inbox or an email from '[your_company_name (Shopify)]'
  • Click 'products_export.zip' link to download the csv file

To download the content of liquid files
Liquid files are usually includes in the theme backup process (above). However, if you wish to take extra precaution by making copies of any liquid file templates you created, use the following steps. In this example, my 'Contact Us' page has special javascript and other code that was not permissible within the regular static pages. Consequently, the contents of that page were placed inside a liquid template.
  • Create a folder in Google Drive
  • (Optional) This step ensures you remember the correspondences between liquid pages and static pages. Take a screenshot of the backend of the page to which the template applies.
    • Online store - Pages - click on the page - make a screen shot (usually by pressing the 'PrtSc' button on your computer).
  • (Optional) Paste this screenshot into a Google Docs Page
  • Settings
  • Online Store
  • Themes
  • Click the 'Actions' (dropdown menu for more options)
  • Select the 'Edit code' option
  • Scroll down to the 'templates' section and look for the template you created.
  • Open your template. Then copy and paste its contents into Google Docs (as an option, below the screenshot of the backend of the page to which the template relates).
  • Name the Google Doc appropriately, perhaps the same as the liquid file.

To download static page content
This requires accessing the HTML code from each static page and then copying the contents into a text file, using programs like Notepad++.
  • Online store
  • Pages
  • Select the page
  • Click the < > button to access the HTML code.
  • Paste the HTML code into Notepad++ or other suitable text program

To record details from apps
A few apps (like MailChimp) will automatically save all of your updated details. In fact, you can continue accessing them even after your store has been closed. However, since this is not always the case, save the details of other apps.
  • Apps
  • Click the link of the app to see details of the settings and location on your site you applied the app
  • Click 'Update app'
  • As much as possible, take screenshots and videos of the front and back ends of apps.
  • Repeat this for each app in turn

To download PDF, images, etc
Unfortunately, there are no assurances that your files will appear when you open your account again. Specifically, it is likely that you will need to reload all of the images and reassign the new hyperlinks. Consequently, it is a good idea to download copies.
  • Settings
  • Files
  • Click the link of each document
  • Save the file to your computer by clicking the download icon in the top right corner of the Google Chrome browser window.

To copy collections & their definitions

  • Products
  • Collections
  • Take screen shots with the collection names and definitions (such as tags. Tags are automatically copied into the CSV coding when downloading a backed up copy of the products. See steps above.)

To disconnect the domain
If there is any chance that you will reopen your store on a platform other than Shopify, you should disconnect the domain before deactivating and closing your store. If you do not, you will be unable to point the domain to that other platform without first paying the activation fee.
  • Sales channel
  • Domain
  • In the 'primary domain' section, click the 'disable redirection' link

ECommerce Apps I Like or Use on Shopify

Plugins are small pieces of software that are compatible with the Shopify software to the extent that it can be plugged in or added on. Plugins introduce some specialized functionality. The following are some examples that add a lot more functionality to an ecommerce store.

  • Address Validator by RoboTurk. This checks for mis-spelling and other errors in customer entries of their addresses. This works for only US and Canada addresses (with hopes of including international locations over time). This app can reduce late deliveries (and from the makers' estimation, product returns). The pricing is also good. There is a free 14-day trial and the 1st 100 orders free. When billing begins, each order will cost $0.03. Value added: customer service
  • Arka: custom packaging and fulfilment for your own branded packaging.
  • Automatic supplier inventory management: Some of your suppliers may have an app established with Shopify that automatically updates inventory levels. Once you establish whether you suppliers have this agreement with Shopify, it may be possible to automatically track inventory levels on your website. Value added: customer service (convenience)
  • EVM Lookbook: This is a free app that puts clickable text tags for each of multiple products that appear in a single image. This is ideal for product reviews from customers who include single photos that include multiple products. Value added: customer service (product sales)
  • Fraudlabs: has a free version up to 500 monthly transactions with several price packages. Value added: customer service (security)
  • Fraud Filter by Shopify: This is a free app that allows you create filters that can flag, cancel and immediately refund fraudulent transactions. There appears to be some bugs however. For instance, since this app does not prevent the sale upfront, it is unsuitable for digital products that a sale confirmation delivers immediately. Additionally, customer reviews suggest that it still allows identified fraudsters already entered into its filters to complete subsequent transactions. Value added: customer service (security)
--
--
  • Gift Reggie: This is a paid app that allows customers or even sales people to create gift registries for a customer. The registry is shared with a public URL. Unlike other registries, visitors to the registry will not be shown the same or similar products from competing stores. The packages start with as few as 5 active public registries for USD 5. You may change your package according to he number of active registries you wish to maintain within a month. Other features like telephone support and functionality are the same for all packages. Value added: Promoting brand awareness
  • Has it shipped yet (closed July 2017): This app integrates well with Shopify. It provides you, the store owner, with convenience because it frees up your customer service resources in dealing with one of the single most frequently asked questions, 'has my order been shipped yet?' It creates a webpage on your website where customers can get their order's status with their order number (and, if you prefer more security, their order email address). I particularly like the easy setup. A video is available for each of the 3 steps. Coding is not required for set up either. Value added: customer service (convenience)
  • Order Lookup (a replacement for the 'Has it shipped yet' app): Unfortunately, although this app was recommended by the makers of 'Has it shipped yet', it does not offer the service free, even for an initial number of orders. It costs USD 10 monthly regardless of the number of orders placed at your store. However, past 100 sales, each subsequent order has a cost of USD 0.05. Overall however, the price should be manageable for anyone who is running a profitable store.
  • Help Center: This allows you to have a phenomenal FAQs page. It allows you to arrange topics into collapsible categories and subcategories. If your store visitors do not want to scroll through the topics, they have only to start typing their question for this app to use search through all of the words within the page to suggest questions with matching word(s). An alternative is FAQ by POWr. Value added: customer service (information)
  • McAfee Secure: This gives your customers the confidence that they will be able to use their credit card securely on your website. Value added: customer service (security)
  • MailChimp: This is quite a favorite for newsletters. Value added: promotion of (new) products and for tentpoling
  • Mega Menu: Many of Shopify's free themes do not allow for navigation bars beyond the basic one-level drop down menues. However, Mega Menu allows you to create any time of drop down menu for each section. Value added: customer service (convenient store navigation)
  • Order Logic. This app allows you to establish minimum purchase volumes. It is a paid plugin with monthly charges. Value added: profitability as it relates to raising  the average order value (AOV)
  • Parcelify: Shopify's system currently allows you to plan several shipping plans but almost only based on weight. This app allows you to create multiple types of shipping (or freighting) options. Value added: customer service (convenience)
  • Privvy. Great app for popups, flyouts, landing pages on just the free version alone. The paid version includes email sequences and other functions. Overall however, the functionality is great, even for the free version. Furthermore, it has a very clean look and feel - much like how Apple was to Windows when Apple was head and shoulders over Windows. Value added: lead value optimization
  • Product Reviews: This is self explanatory. Value added: product promotion using social proof
  • PushCrew. This app sends automatic push announcement advertisements on the desktop of a subscriber. For instance, it announces the commencement of live webinars. Value added: customer communications / promotion
  • Signifyd is a fraud and chargeback prevention app. It appears to differentiate itself by offering a guarantee to cover chargebacks fully, including processing fees if they had previously approved an order with a green ticket and score. The app completely automates the processes of checking the legitimacy of transactions (mentioned here). Note however that Signifyd may not cover incidents of friendly fraud. See list of conditions covered for chargeback reimbursements, reimbursement claim manual and other reimbursement manuals. Value added: customer service (security)

  • They have a fixed 1% charge per transaction on all transactions OR a fixed 4% through the 'On demand plan' for only some of all your store's transactions. The latter is usually used for higher ticket items.
Large
  • Tabify. Is a product page tab generator. It allows product-specific customization because the tabs are generated by including header tags within the description. However, if you like, you can create a tab that recurs on all product pages. At USD 3.95 monthly, it is a cheaper but apparently comparable alternative to Easy Tab (at USD 5 monthly). Value added: customer service (product information)
  • Tawk.to: Great free app for live chat. It is absolutely top notch. This app provides a lot of customization without charge. In fact, its features are all available free of cost. Such free features include multiple agents, multiple websites (aka 'properties'), shortcut phrases and much more. Get a basic intro (with instructional links). Value added: customer service as it relates to one-on-one customer communication
  • UniteXpress: is ideal for dropshippers from AliExpress. This allows you to automatically import products from the AliExpress website directly into your Shopify store ... and ship directly to your customers. This app is free up to the 499th monthly order, after which the monthly cost is USD 24.99. Value added: customer service (convenience) and operational efficiency
  • Welcome Screen (by Hero). This app allows you to create full-screen push advertising pop-ups. There is even a free version. (Overall, I find Privvy as an attractive alternative because Privvy does not have the bug issues that does Welcome Screen. Additionally Privvy has considerably more functionality, even on the free version.) Value added: lead value optimization
  • WishTack: This is not the best app for gift registries. However, it may work for a less professional presentation and shopping experience. It allows your customers to create a any type of registry (bridal registry, baby shower registry or any generic wishlist). Customers will announce this wishlist on Facebook to friends who could buy items and collaborate to buy single items ... all without notifying your customer. Customers can send a link to friends named anything they wish like 'My bridal registry', etc. They may even include an image of themselves. The key downside is that, after spending money of paid traffic, this app actually recommends the same or similar products from competing stores that include ecommerce giants like Amazon. This is the major deal breaker for me for key projects. See Gift Reggie as a better paid alternative that starts with USD 5 monthly for 5 registries. Value added: customer value regarding financial cost; brand awareness promotion.
  • Zopim Live Chat: Great app, even the free version. It essentially replicates the ever near brick-and-mortar shop assistant. It is ideal as a free chat app if you will have only 1 agents. However, I prefer Tawk.to if you want more functionality (like multiple agents, websites aka 'properties' and so on) and a free account for all the features for which Zopim charges when you want more upgrades. Value added: customer service regarding one-one virtual and direct customer communication
  • Referral Affiliate Programs: These apps allow you to maintain your site's own referral affiliate program with social media customers, influencers, bloggers, employees and so on. Value added: lead value optimization, evangelism and brand awareness promotions.
    • Refersion Affiliate Tracking:
      • You can track: sales and royalties using data like SKUs (a retailer's stock keeping unit number), email addresses and so on.
      • Affiliate experience: Each affiliate will have their own dashboard that also allows them to track their activity real time.
      • Automation: Auto-emails for specific events like their account approval, completed sales and impending payments.
      • Payments: Affiliates can use Paypal and custom gift cards.
      • Cost: Different plans like 2.2% on affiliate sales or USD 79 monthly minimum (whichever is greater), with a 14-day trial, conversion triggers (like coupons, automatic emails and SKUs) with chat and email support. They are open to discussing custom plans for monthly charges.
    • LeadDyno:
      • You can track: Unlimited number of affiliates. Up to 10 levels of lead commissions. (A 'level' refers to any unique commission rate with a corresponding affiliate type).
      • Automation: Automatic email for different events like inviting customers to be affiliates when they buy, etc
      • Affiliate experience: their own dashboard to track their earnings. 'Conversion triggers' include coupon codes.
      • Payments: Paypal
      • Cost: USD 49 (or USD 29 with Shopify) + 0% on sales monthly to 3k unique visitors with email, phone and chat support 7 days. 14-day free trial.
-- --
  • International Shipping:
    • Yakit: This is a free app for international (not domestic) shipping. The company is based in California, US and India. The service is drop shipper friendly.
      • Instant shipping and duties rates: Yes. They are guaranteed by Yakit.
      • Tracking: yes
      • Shipping time & cost: delivery within 7 to 9 days worldwide at USD 10 / lb or more for faster shipment.
      • Weight Minimums: There are no minimum shipment weights or volumes. However, smaller weights and volumes may be costlier.
      • Origin country: US, China, HK, Singapore, UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain. They may be able to work from other countries if you ask them via chat.
      • Insurance: Yes, up to USD 2,000 without cost
      • Customer stays on your website: yes

Product Page Visuals to Motivate Sales

Since research shows that up to 92% of consumers said visuals are the top motivating factor affecting a purchase decision, improving your store's product page images is a worthwhile priority.

The key is to give potential buyers an experience that is as virtual as possible to what they would have experienced had they reviewing products in a physical store. As much as possible, you must make it as easy as possible for potential buyers to engage their 5 senses. To do this, images should give as much information as possible to minimize uncertainty, a major deal breaker at the purchase decision point. Here are checklist guidelines.

  • High resolution images on a white background. The size and style of the images should be uniform across the website, or at least product lines.
  • Allow the zoom-in function.
  • Show different angles: left, right, back, front and, if useful, above and below.
  • Show the entire product in all variant forms, like color, size and so on.
  • Show the entire product in all variant effects. Some products like concealer makeup may have variants that cover scars differently.
  • Use one image to display the single product in different ways. For instance, one image position the same product, let's say a chocolate packaged, (next to another that is) un-boxed and next to other un-boxed ones in useful angles.
  • Contextual imagery. Allow different segments of your target market to visualize themselves using the product. This is especially the case for very personal products like jewelry, clothing and so on. For instance, sun glasses may be displayed on people from different ethnicities, with different facial structures and so on.
  • Illustrate dimension, especially for unique products. For instance, a tiny torch light can be placed next to or inside of a commonly known object like a purse, book, coins and so on.
  • Show features that sell the product's competitive advantage and unique selling proposition.
  • Use visual reviews. Evangelism is a powerful motivator. If possible, get customers to create photo or video reviews.

Customer Groups in Shopify & Segmentation

    Customer Segments in Shopify
This post demonstrates how to use Shopify's different types of tags and filters to create segments. We'll assume that you already have at least a few customers in Shopify.
    • Log in to your Shopify admin account
    • Enter the 'Customers' section in either of the following 2 ways
      • Simultaneously enter the G and C keys on your keyboard   -- OR --
      • Select 'customers' (in the left column)

To create custom tags for customer segments in Shopify
Custom tags allow you to create segments that are unique to your business. Whether you use psychographic or demographic tags, they will allow you to find and define market segments in a highly customizable and specific way. For instance, based on any number of filters in combination or alone, you can create custom tags that will segment customers as being 'loyal', 'brand evangelists', 'FB grp influencers' and so on.
    --
    --

    • See below how to use default and or other pre-existing filters to find only those customers to whom you will apply a new tag
    • Select the customer(s) to be tagged. You can either tick the top box (pictured immediately below) for all customers shown or hand pick individual customers, one at a time by ticking next to each name. A new set of options will appear next to the ticked box.
    • In the 'bulk action' dropdown menu, select 'add tags'
    • Type as many custom tags as you like into the text box. Separate each tag from the next with a comma. Click 'apply changes' when done.

To edit custom tags and or customer details for entire customer segments

      • After selecting the members of a customer segment, the option 'edit customers' will appear (as pictured below). Click 'edit customers'.

      • You will see all of the selected customers, along with their details and tags.
      • Notice the fields that define the displaying customer details in the top left corner. In this case, these fields are email, tags and first name.
      • Select those fields you want to edit.
        • Delete the fields you do not want to edit by clicking the 'x' on the right of its button.
        • Alternatively, use the dropdown menu 'add filter' for additional fields.

      • Edit the details of each customer within the segment. In this case, the cursor is in a customer's (Hannah's) email address field, thereby allowing me to edit it. Additionally, if Hannah moves from Canada, I can delete that tag from the 'tag' column. If her new location is the US, you may now add 'US' by clicking in the box that contains her current tags for options to add, create or delete tags.
      • If your custom tags involve variables with different values, you can use group tags as below. In this example, I have 2 member groups, a and b.

To find customers that meet specific criteria
There are 3 types of criteria that you can use to find customers with high specificity; fixed default tags, customizable default tags and fully customizable tags.

The fixed default tags appear on the dashboard (as pictured immediately below). When you click on one of these, the qualifying criteria will appear in the search window and or immediately below it. For instance, if you clicked on Shopify's default 'prospects' group, the qualifying criteria would appear as 'abandoned an order last_month'.
      Shopify customer default tags

Another type of tag is the customizable default tag like 'money spent', 'number of orders' and so on. Unlike fixed default tags that are unchangeable, these tags require you to enter a value. As pictured immediately above, they can be found in the 'filter customers' dropdown menu, directly below the fixed default tags.

Finally, custom tags can be entered most easily by typing each tag into the search window that is also directly below the fixed default options.

You can use these 3 types of tags alone or in combination with others.

      • Click on a fixed default tag like 'accepts marketing', 'repeat customers' and so on. As pictured below, the active tag appears below the search window and only qualifying customers appear. In this example, there are 3. If you wish to use multiple types of tags, always start from fixed default to customizable default and then fully customizable tags.

      • To filter on a second fixed default tag; To include additional conditions, edit the first tag by adding other tag customizable or custom tags before saving the search. Details in the upcoming steps. (I do not believe it is possible to enter a second  one without the first being automatically deselected).
      • To find customers meeting a specific customizable default criteria (money spent, number of orders, date created, etc), click the 'filter customers' dropdown menu (next to the search window). Then click the 'select a filter' dropdown menu for options.

When you select a type of filter, only filter-specific options will appear. For instance, 'date created' offers options like '1 week ago', '1 month ago' and so on. 'Money spent' displays options like 'greater than', 'equals' and so on, along with a space for entering the value.

      • To add a second customizable filter, enter the customizable details then press 'enter'. Do NOT click the 'add filter' button because it automatically deselects any preexisting filters.

      • To find customers based on custom tags; type as many custom tags as you need in the search window. Separate each tag with a comma.

Specific defined customers groups with multiple tags in Shopify
Customers can be found with high specificity with multiple tags at once. in this case, 4 tags were used: 1) the first the default tag 'Customer accepts marketing' which must be selected before the other tags 2) customizable default tag 'money spent', 3) custom tag 'Canada' and 3) customer tag 'member'

To save a search based on multiple tags

You can save your multi-tag segment for future sessions as follows.
      • Apply filters to create an ideal segment (as above)
      • Click 'save search' on the right end of the search window
      • Enter the details and click 'save'

      • The saved search will now appear in the top menu of the 'customers' section. See image below.

save search filters custom tags customer groups segments in Shopify
This search criteria 'abd cart, 1 wk, member grp A' is made of customers in group A who accept marketing. Perhaps the marketer plans on retargeting all individuals currently meeting these criteria.

      Shopify Liquid File Basics

Liquid files are referred to as 'template language', templates or language used for loading dynamic content. An example of a dynamic page is the product page. Unlike a 'static page' like About Us, Contact Us and so on whose content remains the same, the single product page displays the
content of any of multiple products. The liquid file however has a fixed set of rules that apply for all products about what will (not) be shown, how and where. When customers visit the product page, they see the product that interests them in with element details that was prescribed in the product page like the unique product title, image, description and so on.

Liquid files borrows from other protocols. For instance, it includes many elements that are familiar: to those with HTML experience, like h2; to programming logic and so on. The liquid file extension is .liquid. Examples of file names include index.liquid, theme.liquid and so on. You can use it in any text editor (like Notepad). Each liquid file will have 'placeholders', like this {{ and }} for example within which page elements are named.

      Its terminology is as follows.

      • 'Liquid objects' (aka liquid variables) are attributes, ie similar to attributes that exist within html tags. In Shopify terminology, these attributes are called 'output'. Liquid objects are contained within brackets like {{ and }}. For instance, when you type inside Shopify's wysiwyg page editor, appears wherever the {{ product.content }} appears. Consequently, if you placed a contact form below that object code, the form will appear underneath anything you type inside the page editor.

      {{ product.content }}

      {{ product.title }}

      {{ product.description }}

      <h2> {{ product.title }} </h2>

      • 'Tags' comprise the programming logic that appear within {% and %} in the beginning and then {% endif %} . Programming logic is a language that instructs computers what to display based on a set of rules. The rules comprise several sentences. In layman terms, the rules essentially say 'if .... then do .... Otherwise, do ...'.
